Hillcrest sits about ten kilometres north-east of the city in the City of Port Adelaide Enfield, between North East Road and Fosters Road. For much of the twentieth century it was home to Hillcrest Hospital, the state’s psychiatric hospital, which closed in 1994; what remains of its buildings now stands in neighbouring Oakden.
From 1993 the state government began renewing the suburb’s housing, replacing many weatherboard homes on large blocks with newer homes on smaller lots. Long green linear reserves, left from a Tea Tree Gully railway planned in the 1950s and never built, run between the streets, and North East Road along the southern edge is lined with car dealerships. Its neighbours include Gilles Plains, Holden Hill, Klemzig, Windsor Gardens and Northgate.
