Hope Valley got its name in 1842, when storekeeper William Holden came home to find his house and shop burnt out in a bushfire and, rather than give up, called the place Hope Valley. Many of the first settlers were German families who came across from Klemzig, and the pub where they met, the Bremen Arms, dates from the 1840s and still trades on Grand Junction Road as the Valley Inn.
It is all residential now, in the City of Tea Tree Gully about thirteen kilometres north-east of the city, built around the Hope Valley Shopping Centre. The Hope Valley Reservoir, one of Adelaide’s larger bodies of water, dates from the 1870s.
