Para Hills sits on the escarpment where the Adelaide plains meet the foothills, about fourteen kilometres north of the city, mostly in the City of Salisbury with a part in Tea Tree Gully. The ground rises around sixty metres above the plains, and the steep gullies that cut through the suburb have been kept as parks.
Its housing went up from 1959, when Reid Murray Developments bought up the farmland for what was then the largest private housing development in Australia, planned from the start as a self-contained neighbourhood. Today it has two shopping centres, schools and sporting grounds, with Parafield Airport close by.
